Alberta's VenturePrize Business Plan Competition |
| The largest business plan competition of its kind in Canada, Alberta's
VenturePrize Business Plan Competition is designed for individuals, companies and both
faculty and students of post-secondary institutions who have high-growth business ideas.
Through seminars, tools, templates, and the mentorship program, VenturePrize helps
entrepreneurs create successful businesses by transferring ideas into a solid plan for
growth. Picomole Instruments Inc.
was the Grand Prize Winner in 2007, earning the company $108,000 in cash and in-kind
prizes, including legal services, commercialization/prototyping support, marketing,
management services and business development support. |

| The NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) provides a
range of both technical and business oriented advisory services along with potential
financial support to growth-oriented Canadian small - and medium-sized enterprises.
The program is delivered by an extensive integrated network of 260 professionals in 100
communities across the country. Working directly with these clients, NRC-IRAP supports
innovative research and development and commercialization of new products and services. |

| The Alberta Ingenuity Fund |
| Alberta Ingenuity supports the highest quality basic and applied research
in science and engineering disciplines through its awards programs. These programs
are developed in conjunction with the international Science and Engineering Advisory
Council and the Alberta research community to maintain the competitiveness of Alberta's
universities, colleges and technical institutes and to help recruit bright new researchers
and encourage scientific leaders to stay in the province. |

Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) |
| Established by the Government of Alberta in 1980, the Alberta Heritage
Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) supports biomedical and health research at Alberta
universities, affiliated institutions, and other medical and technology-related
institutions. Operating funds come from a portion of the interest revenue from a
Government endowment, with an initial investment of $300 million. With prudent
management and financial guidance, the current value of the endowment has grown to
approximately $1.2 billion (2006). Since 1980, AHFMR has contributed more than $850
million directly to the scientific community. |
