Picomole Resumes Sample Collection and Introduces Second Generation Spectrometer

(Moncton) November 10th 2020 - Picomole is excited to announce that the second-generation spectrometer is now operational and processing samples. The second generation builds upon Picomole’s proprietary first-generation spectrometer, improving both the speed and accuracy of processing breath samples. The second-generation spectrometer is another step towards Picomole’s goal of detecting diseases such as lung cancer with a simple, painless breath test.

The second-generation spectrometer will be put in action quickly as Picomole has resumed sample collection from research sites within the Horizon Health Network in New Brunswick.  Research projects are sampling breath to identify the presence of breast cancer,  and lung cancer.   An additional study with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients will help to understand the limitations of breath sampling for individuals who suffer from limitations in breath function.

In order to move forward with this important research, Picomole received ethics approval of its COVID-19 safety protocols.  Protocols ensure that participants and healthcare workers can be assured sample collection is safe. Key protocols include the sanitation of the collection space before and after each sample is collected, installation of a protective shield between the participant and healthcare provider and utilization of disposable mouth pieces with filters that are 99.99% effective in filtering out viruses and bacteria.
